Each time a major prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
- Another creative title was excluded that year
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're modest productions, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
